A community kick-off to gear up for October — whether you are a seasoned Pythonist or just a fan of the language.
After a couple of quieter years on the community calendar, Hacktoberfest returned to our Initiatives list with an MLH-listed online kick-off on the first evening of October — a chance to prepare together, contribute to open-source projects, and collaborate with like-minded people.
The session was practical and contributor-focused. The published agenda highlighted three themes:
In other words: less ceremony, more “how do I find a good issue and open a PR maintainers will actually want.”
Hacktoberfest 2024 kept the quality-first model that emerged after 2020. Participants registered on the official site, then aimed for four high-quality pull or merge requests between 1 and 31 October on GitHub or GitLab projects that had opted in (typically via the hacktoberfest topic). Maintainers had to accept those contributions for them to count. Registration unlocked a digital Holopin badge featuring mascot Sloan the Sloth, which leveled up as PRs were accepted.
DigitalOcean’s

guide also spelled out maintainer prep: topic tags, good first issue / hacktoberfest labels, a clear CONTRIBUTING.md, and rejecting spam with the right labels.
