A Discord kick-off to plan October together — open to every skill level and every language.
Like the year before, Minsk Python Meetup wanted to back the global open-source push in October — and do “irreparable good” for whichever projects we could reach. The 2021 edition opened with a Friday evening online meetup in Discord to talk plans for the month.
Everyone interested was welcome, regardless of programming experience. Language of code did not matter — though Python was especially encouraged. The call explicitly opened the door to:
The meetup itself was a place to sync: share what you hoped to work on in October, ask how registration and rules worked that year, and find company for the month ahead.
After the spam-heavy chaos of 2020, Hacktoberfest 2021 leaned hard into maintainer-friendly defaults. Repositories on GitHub and — for the first time in a major way — GitLab needed to opt in (for example with a hacktoberfest topic). Only accepted pull or merge requests counted toward the challenge. Maintainers could earn recognition without submitting PRs themselves. Completing four accepted contributions remained the classic path to the limited-edition shirt, while smaller participation (even a single PR or attending an event) was still encouraged.
Official details lived on the Hacktoberfest site (then under the DigitalOcean umbrella). DigitalOcean also published a 2021 announcement covering GitLab support and the maintainer-focused rule changes.
